Processing Ginger into Powder (Instant Tea Ginger) as a Small-scale Business

Norelie O. Alata

Abstract

An instant ginger tea was developed by a student entrepreneur from the Technology and Product Development Center of the Mindoro State College of Agriculture and Technology (MinSCAT), Alcate, Victoria, Oriental Mindoro. Ginger tea was prepared by extracting the juice from 1 kg of ginger, adding the same amount of brown sugar, and vigorously mixing the resulting mass until it assumed a hard and solid consistency which was then pulverized.. The tea products were packed in 150 g/plastic packet, labeled with the product name and health benefits of ginger tea and sold in retail. Marketing strategies employed include posting bills in bulletin boards, sharing through networking sites, and direct selling. A consumer satisfaction survey revealed that tea drinkers found its sweet and spicy taste highly satisfying. A total of 250 packets were sold from July to December 2014.
